Gearing up for record classes

Next time you re-organise the wine rack, spare a thought for the Sydney Royal Wine Show team, which is currently organising 13,596 bottles of premium Australian wine into classes and categories in readiness for the 2001 Royal Agricultural Society Sydney Royal Wine Show.

For each of the 2,266 entries for 2001 exhibitors provide six bottles of the wine to be judged by Sydney Royal judging panel.

The 2001 Sydney Royal Wine Show will have 64 classes including the major grape varieties, plus special classes for small producers whose annual grape crush does not exceed 500 tonnes.

South Australian wines represent the largest contingent from each of the states; with 88 exhibitors in total crossing the border in a bid for a Sydney Royal Gold medal. NSW contenders are close behind with 66 exhibitors from wine regions throughout the state.

The boom in red wine in Australia and the increasing demand for our export product is reflected in the entries for 2001, with the class for Dry Red Table Wine (class 6) attracting a record 136 entries, and Shiraz (class 23) attracting 129 entries.

Brian Croser, executive chairman and winemaker of Petaluma Wines, will chair the 2001 Sydney Royal Wine Show judges. He replaces Len Evans AO OBE who held the chair from 1978 to 1999.

Supporting Mr Croser on the judging panel will be Jim Brayne, Wendy Stuckey, Stephen Pannell, James Halliday, James Godfrey, Huon Hooke, Zar Brooks, Chris Hatcher, Phillip John and Vanya Cullen.

The Royal Agricultural Society Sydney Royal Wine Show will take place from 5 to 8 February 2001, at the Sydney Showground, Homebush Bay.
